Enrolling your child in dance lessons is an exciting step that can bring a lifetime of joy, creativity, and physical and mental benefits. Age, Interests & Abilities

First, consider your child’s age, interests, and physical ability. Some dance styles are better suited for younger children, such as our Kinderballet classes, while others are more challenging for older kids, like Broadway Jazz, for example. It’s also important to choose a dance style that aligns with your child’s interests and passions. For example, if your child is a natural performer, Musical Theatre or Jazz might be a great fit, while if they’re more athletic, Acro or Contemporary might be a better choice. Additionally, make sure your child’s physical development and ability are taken into consideration when choosing a dance style and program.

Dance Class Logistics

Second, consider the location, hours, and schedule of the dance school. Finding a dance school that is conveniently located and offers flexible hours can make a big difference in your family’s schedule and ensure your child attends regularly. Look for a dance school that offers a range of programs, classes and schedules to fit your family’s needs.

Reputation & Experience

Finally, consider the reputation, experience, and qualifications of the dance teachers. It’s important to choose a dance school with experienced, qualified teachers who have a passion for working with children and a commitment to helping your child reach their full potential. Our Redland Dance teachers are passionate, experienced and qualified in their field, ensuring a positive, fun and rewarding learning experience for your child.

Advantages and Benefits of Dance for Children

Dance fosters a love and appreciation of movement, rhythm and music, but it also provides a positive and supportive environment for children to develop key skills and build confidence.
From improved physical coordination and flexibility to increased cognitive development, the benefits of dance education are many and varied. Children have the opportunity to build strong relationships with their teachers and peers, as well as develop important social and emotional skills through participating in group dance activities.

With the guidance and support of experienced and qualified dance teachers, your child will have the opportunity to explore their creativity, build their technique and grow as a dancer in a safe and nurturing environment. Building their skills also allows an opportunity to build strong foundations for future success in dance should your child wish to pursue it further.

Balancing Dance Education with Other Activities for Children

Being a parent is a demanding job, and finding the right balance between your child’s activities and responsibilities can be a challenge. However, we firmly believe that enrolling your child in dance classes has many benefits and can complement their other activities in a positive way.

Dance education teaches children the importance of time management and organisation, as they must balance their dance lessons with their homework, sports, and other activities. Dancing also provides a creative outlet, helping children to unwind from their busy schedules. Moreover, it fosters teamwork, communication, and collaboration skills that are essential for success in all areas of life.

At Redland Dance we have developed a schedule of classes to suit the needs and goals of students and parents. Dance Makeup Tutorial: Preparing Your Child’s Makeup For The Stage

When your child is preparing for their first on stage appearance, you naturally want them to shine! While the idea of children wearing make-up may be off putting as a parent, stage makeup is a must. Without it, the features on your child’s face simply won’t be visible under the bright lights. In this dance makeup tutorial, we will guide you through the essentials of stage makeup for your little star.

What do you need for the perfect stage makeup look?

You’ll need a good foundation (ideally two shades darker than your child’s skin tone), a powder to set it, blusher for the cheeks, eyeshadows, eyeliners, and mascara for the eyes. It’s also helpful to have some baby wipes and cotton tips handy. For a polished and professional look, we recommend using browns for the eyes, avoiding blue eyeshadows, and steering clear of glitter in the makeup. We are aiming for a professional and polished look whenever we go on stage.

To start, apply a little bit of moisturiser to your child’s face to create an even skin tone for the foundation. Then, apply a foundation that’s a little bit darker than your child’s natural skin tone. You can use your own foundation or opt for one that’s specifically made for stage makeup. Use your fingers or a sponge to blend the foundation into your child’s face, neck, and chin.

Once the foundation is applied, set it with a powder. This will help to keep the shine away and prevent any sweating under the lights.

Next, it’s time for the eyes. Start by brushing your child’s eyebrows upwards with a little brush to open up the eyes. If your child has fair skin, you may need to fill in their eyebrows with a natural brown shade. Apply a lighter shade all over the eye and up to the brow to create a wide-eyed look. Then, apply a deeper shade in the crease of the eyelid and the outer edge of the eye. Soften the lines with a brush and reapply for a more dramatic effect.

Finally, use a liquid eyeliner for a long-lasting effect on stage. If your child has fair skin, a dark brown eye pencil might be a better option. Hold your child’s eyebrow up and gently apply the eyeliner along the lash line, being careful not to get too close to the eye. To finish off the look, add some mascara and voila! Your little one is ready to shine on stage.

We hope this guide has been helpful in creating the perfect stage makeup look for your little one. Good luck, and have fun!

How To Make a Ballet Bun: A Step By Step Guide with Redland Dance

Ballet buns are a classic hairstyle for ballet dancers, but they can be tricky to get right. However, with the right tools and a bit of know-how, they can be a breeze! In this how-to video, Miss Rebecca goes into detail and show you the exact steps for how to make a ballet bun and get it right the first time.

Things You’ll Need For a Ballet Bun

  • A hairbrush with good bristles: A good bristle brush is essential to get your ponytail smooth and flat. A brush from Lady Jane is a great option.
  • A tail comb: This will help you create a neat and tidy ponytail, and separate the hair into sections.
  • Water in a spray bottle: Spraying your hair with water will help make it easier to work with and style.
  • Strong hair gel: A good hair gel is key to keeping your hair in place and preventing flyaways.
  • Hairspray: This will help to secure the bun in place and ensure that it lasts all day. Choose a hairspray with an extreme hold.
  • Elastic for the ponytail: A strong ponytail elastic is crucial to support the weight of the hair. The ones from Woolworth’s are a good choice.
  • Pins for the bun: To secure the bun in place, you’ll need the right kind of hairpin. Look for ones with a little ball at the end to avoid scratching your head. Hairpins from Cosmetics Plus are a good option, and come in black or brown.
  • Hair nets: Some people prefer bun nets, which are slightly smaller, but personally, hair nets are a better choice as they can be wrapped around more. Choose a colour that is close to your child’s hair colour. In this video, we chose one from Price Attack which came in a pack of two.

How To Make a Ballet Bun Step by Step

  1. Wet the hair down: Give your hair a quick spritz of water and brush through with your hairbrush.
  2. Apply gel: Put a good dollop of gel into your hand and spread it evenly throughout the hair.
  3. Brush the hair into a ponytail: Use your tail comb to create a neat and tidy ponytail at the crown of the head.
  4. Secure the ponytail with an elastic: Make sure the elastic is tight enough to support the weight of the hair, but not so tight that it hurts.
  5. Loosely wrap the hair around: Take the hair from the ponytail and wrap it around in a circular motion, just like a snail’s shell.
  6. Secure with hairpins: Use the hairpins to secure the hair in place, pushing them in and tucking them under the bun. You can also use your tail comb to smooth down any bumps or flyaways.
  7. Add the hair net: Place the hair net over the bun and wrap it around a couple of times to get the tightness you want.
  8. Secure with hairspray: Give the bun a quick spritz of hairspray to set it in place.
  9. Add any hair accessories: If desired, you can add a hair accessory, such as a hairband or bow, to complete the look.

The Doughnut Bun

A doughnut bun is a popular hairstyle for dancers, especially for jazz performances. It creates a sleek and neat look that enhances the lines of the dancer’s neck and head. Here are the steps to create a doughnut bun:

  1. Start with clean, dry hair that has been brushed and detangled. Divide your hair into two sections: the top section of the hair and the bottom section of the hair.
  2. Take the top section of your hair and smooth it back, securing it with a hair elastic. Make sure to secure it tightly so it doesn’t come loose during your performance.
  3. Take the bottom section of your hair and twist it into a rope, starting from the ends and working your way up towards the roots.
  4. Wrap the twisted hair around the hair elastic that is holding the top section of your hair. Make sure to tuck the ends of the twisted hair underneath the bun.
  5. To secure the bun, insert bobby pins around the edges, making sure to place them parallel to the head. The bobby pins should be inserted through the bun and into the head, securing the bun in place.
  6. To create a smooth, polished look, use a hairnet or hair bun cover over the bun and secure it with bobby pins.
  7. Finish the look with hairspray to hold the bun in place and eliminate flyaways.

Remember, for a classical ballet bun, a doughnut is not necessary. It may be useful for tap and jazz pieces, but for classical ballet, it is best to leave the bun without a doughnut.

So there you have it, a simple and comprehensive guide to doing a ballet bun! With the right tools and a bit of practice, you’ll have a beautiful ballet bun in no time!

Jazz dance is a high-energy and versatile style that combines dynamic movements, kicks, leaps and turns. It’s an excellent form of exercise that helps improve coordination, flexibility and rhythm. Not only does it improve physical fitness, but it also helps to boost self-confidence and self-esteem.

Our jazz dance classes are available for primary school kids, all the way through to young adults in high-school. Classes are tailored to the age and skill level of your child, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and challenged to the right degree. We encourage our students to express themselves through dance, developing performance and presentation skills alongside the technical elements of dance.

In addition to the physical benefits, jazz dance classes are also a great way for kids to socialise and make new friends outside their regular school environment. Our mission at Redland Dance is to foster a supportive and inclusive community where children can bond over their shared love of dance and express themselves without judgement.

John Clarke of Redland Dance in Cleveland is choreographer to Matilda

By Linda Muller, November 30 2016

Redland Dance director John Clarke returns home this week, bringing with him his Matilda family and a labour of love.

Mr Clarke is the resident choreographer for Matilda, a position which has seen him living in Melbourne since July.

Matilda will be staged at QPAC until February 12.

“All the dancers come under my umbrella. It is my job to uphold the integrity of the original choreography. It also needs to be safe on stage so the dancers have to do their warm ups and be communicating freely about their physical health,” he said.

Mr Clarke was headhunted for the job after working with the show’s director Louise Withers on We Will Rock You in 2003.

It was this show that brought him and his wife Rebecca to Australia which they would ultimately make their home.

Both have an impressive international resume, having met in the West End production of Saturday Night Fever. John Clarke has also starred in Evita on West End with Rebecca dancing at the Lido in Paris.

The Clarke’s moved to the Redlands to be closer to the water and good schools. They ultimately purchased the Redland Dance school at Cleveland from dancing colleague and friend Boris Bivona.

“We had a kinship through dance. My daughter learned there and when I told her that Boris would no longer be her teacher, she suggested we buy it. Boris was chuffed that his school would go to someone who would value it as much as he,” Mr Clarke said.

Mr Clarke said that working on a show again was like “a comfy pair of slippers”.

“I love theatre. I love it that everyone works with the common purpose of making the best show they can for an audience and they pour their work into seeing that happen on a daily basis. I like being part of that team and serving the story we are telling,” he said.

Mr Clarke said he had been approached often to choreograph shows.

“I wouldn’t have left my family for just any show. This one is quite special,” he said.

The show involves working with a cast of 29 children in each State.

“The work these children do is just breathtaking. This is a show that everyone should come and see.  It’s inspiring,” he said.

To that end, he has organised a Redland Dance excursion to see Matilda.

“It is good for the dancers to see the level you can reach if you put in the ridiculous amount of work that these children do.  It really is quite impressive,” he said.

Former Redland Dance student Dani Bilios, formerly of Redland Bay is also in the show as girl ensemble dance captain and swing.
